Aristophanes' "The Birds": Would He Be Offended If It Were Recast With A Feminist Twist?
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Would Aristophanes have turned over in his grave if he had seen the following feminist production of his play The Birds? Indeed, one could readily argue that he would not be the least bit appalled at what the female director had done to transform his historical work into one that reflects modern day existence. Key to knowing that this is how Aristophanes would react is knowing a bit about his other works in which he openly touted the elements of feminism with much enthusiasm. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Aspects of the Equality of Women and Women in Marriage as Found in Passages from Ibsen, Wollstonecraft, de Pizan, Mill and Chopin
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 6 page paper discussing the equality and education of women in the works of Ibsen, de Pizan, Wollstonecraft, Mill and Chopin. The equality and education of women and issues which relate to the equality of in marriage have long been evident in the literature of the past 500 years. Christine de Pizan in 1405 first wrote on the importance of the education of women and the ideals of equality in her work “Book of the City of Ladies”. Since that time the same issues have been discussed by Henrik Ibsen in the relationship between Nora and Torvald in “A Doll’s House” (1879), Mary Wollstonecraft in ““A Vindication of the Rights of Women” (1792), John Stuart Mill in “The Subjection of Women” (1869) and Kate Chopin in “The Awakening” (1899). Contrary to the popular belief that women need marriage and men to “rise” in society, these writings show that women crave education and only want marriage if it can be on equal intellectual terms. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Author’s Ideology as Reflected in Alice Walker’s “The Color Purple” and Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing how the ideologies of Alice Walker and Jane Austen are represented in their novels. Women novelists Alice Walker and Jane Austen provide different examples of how they have managed to represent their own ideologies within their novels. Alice Walker wrote “The Color Purple” in 1982 and conveyed her ideologies of equal and civil rights through the first person narration of the central character of Celie who is a poor, black woman living under the oppression of society and the men in her life. Her character slowly develops a sense of independence that Walker wishes upon her black female readers. In the 19th century, Jane Austen’s novel “Pride and Prejudice” also included Austen’s feminist ideologies in regards to many of the unreasonable and unequal aspects in society in the treatment of women. Because Austen was writing at a time when women were expected to only write sentimental novels however, Austen reveals her ideologies through the minor characters in the book, such as Mrs. Bennet, who through a satirical twist find society’s conventions unreasonable while her central characters are considered conventional and therefore accepted. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Black Women and their Reactions to Slavery
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page analysis of the impact wielded by the institution of slavery on African Americans. African American women, in particular, had a tremendously varied reaction to slavery. These reactions varied from complete passivity, to outright violence, to societal action. This paper analyzes the stories related in “Celia, a Slave: A True Story”, “Sojourner Truth : A Life, a Symbol” and “A Black Woman's Civil War Memoirs” to emphasize that some reactions were obviously more effective than others in bringing about positive change. These reactions were shaped not only by the institution of slavery, however, but by the individual circumstances and experiences of individual women and those with whom she interacted.
