Is Facial Communication Universal?
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page discussion of facial expression. Utilizes the research in the field to explore the question of whether or not certain facial expressions are universal in their meaning, e.g. that they have the same meaning regardless of the cultural context. Contrasts the view that facial expression are solely cultural manifestations and thus vary in meaning according to culture and the view that these expressions are biological in their basis and thus have the same meaning regardless of the cultural context. Concludes that while some expressions are universal in their meaning, facial expression is dependent not only on biology but also on culture and on minute-specific details of an encounter. Language and the Brain
[ send me this paper ]
This 22 page paper considers the progression of theoretical perspectives on language and cognitive development as they relate to the biological structures of the brain. In particular, this paper considers the research relative to psycholinguistic models and combines a view of neuroscience and the process of neural code development related to language acquisition as a means of viewing human mental function. Membrane Structure, Haemostasis, and the Healing Process
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page overview of the processes which affect wound healing, haemostasis, and thrombosis. Discusses the role of factors such as integrin and
fibrogen as well as various inflammatory metabolites, neurtophils, and proteolytic enzymes which relate either directly or indirectly to membrane structure. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Memory: A Neurological Viewpoint
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page discussion of the neurological and environmental processes involved in memory formation and utilization. Emphasizes that the physiology of the phenomena of memory formation is extremely complex. It is a process which is directly associated with the hippocampus area of the brain and involves a number of neurological interactions between the hippocampus and its various components. Injury to the hippocampus area of the brain, whether through physical trauma or disease such as Alzheimer’s, results in detriment to spatial and non-spatial learning, serial learning, memory, and tasks such as passive avoidance performance. Bibliography lists 18 sources.

Motor Skills Development: Neuronal Function and the Impact of Cerebral Palsy
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page overview of neuronal function in relation to motor skills. Delineates the impact of cerebral palsy on motor skill development. Concludes that the exact causes of cerebral palsy are not known. What is known, however, is that the condition is characterized by impeded neuronal function and that this impedance translates to poor motor skill development. Bibliography lists 12 sources.

Posture: Anatomy, Good and Poor Posture, Ailments and Treatments
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 20 page paper discussing the anatomical aspects of posture, good and poor posture, causes of poor posture, ailments and treatments. Many aspects of the anatomy affect a person’s posture which can easily turn from good into bad and painful. The spinal column provides the basis for good posture and naturally contains three curves which must be maintained. Muscles groups in the upper chest, back, trunk, lumbar region and in the lower extremities all contribute to the maintenance of good posture and when rehabilitation is required all muscle groups and their antagonists must be addressed. While poor posture seems natural to most people, proper posture must be a conscious effort applied on a daily basis which includes aspects in living space, work space and sleep environments. Many afflictions can be the result of poor posture such as migraine headaches, lower back pain, joint pain and nerve damage among others. Other than an awareness of good posture, many treatments are used for the rehabilitation of those patients who have severely bad posture which has resulted in an injury. Of the traditional methods there is exercise, stretching, strengthening and cardiovascular regimens which are applied. Physicians also recommend various perceptual control techniques, and mind-body therapies including yoga, tai chi, and the Alexander and Feldenkrais techniques among others. Selection of these therapies is largely based on the patient’s diagnosis and preference and what he or she is most likely to continue when the initial treatment has been completed.
