Advantages & Disadvantages of Heamotopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation
[ send me this paper ]
A 15 page paper discussing transplants of stem cells from both bone marrow and peripheral blood. Bone marrow transplant is still the most aggressive form of cancer treatment and is often necessary following high dose chemotherapy and radiation for the eradication of certain cancerous conditions. Such high-dose treatments destroy the patient's bone marrow, the site of all blood production, along with their targeted cancers. Now used in treatment of other diseases as well, the autologous bone marrow transplant in which the patient is his own donor is far more common than is the allogeneic transplant in which another person donates bone marrow to the patient. Increasingly, peripheral blood stem cell harvest and transplant is used either in place of or in addition to the autologous bone marrow transplant, and the pre-treatment patient may soon not be his only possible donor as the use of stem cells harvested from umbilical cord blood is more heavily investigated. Bibliography lists 41 sources.

Stem Cell Therapy
[ send me this paper ]
A 2 page paper discussing the stem cell aspect of chemotherapy. Stem cells are the progenitor cells of all types of blood cells, including the white blood cells that combat infection and invasion, and red blood cells that supply nourishment to all the tissues of the body. They primarily reside in the bone marrow, but some also can be found circulating in the blood. Cancer chemotherapy depresses bone marrow activity so that fewer blood cells are produced. Stem cell therapy involves harvesting bone marrow prior to chemotherapy treatment, then reintroducing it following treatment so that blood cell production can occur at optimum rates. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Alzheimer's Disease, The Brain, & Memory Loss
[ send me this paper ]
A 9 page research paper exploring the possible causes and the progression of symptoms of senile dementia, of which Alzheimer's is the most widely occurring and best-known type. The Effects Of Alzheimer's Disease On Brain Structure
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page research paper on the physical changes observed in the brain cells of Alzheimer's Disease patients. Early in the century, pathologist Louis Alzheimer first discovered and described the neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques consistent with the presence of the disease. For all the research into the causes of Alzheimer's, microscopic examination at autopsy remains the definitive diagnosis tool. The paper presents descriptions of both neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques along with popular theories of their formations and possible physiological treatments. As it is though, researchers only know the two conditions are part of the disease. Whether they are caused by Alzheimer's or Alzheimer's causes them is still unknown. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
